What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Nervous about your first session? Here’s exactly what usually happens — so it feels a little less unknown.
The short answer
A first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, a bit of your history, and what you’re hoping for. You’re not expected to spill everything or “do it right.”
It’s a two-way fit
You’re also feeling out whether this person feels safe and easy to talk to. That fit matters — and it’s okay to notice it and, if needed, try someone else.
