How to Know If Therapy Is Actually Working

Progress in therapy is real but not always obvious. Here’s how to tell it’s doing something.

The short answer

Progress can be quiet: reacting a little less intensely, recovering faster after a hard day, noticing patterns in the moment, setting a boundary you couldn’t before. It’s rarely a straight line, and “feeling worse” for a bit can mean you’re finally touching real material.

Talk about it

If you’re unsure it’s helping, say so — a good therapist welcomes that conversation and will adjust. Naming it is part of the work, not a failure.
