What Is IFS (Internal Family Systems) Therapy?
IFS helps you understand the different “parts” of you — the anxious one, the critic, the one that shuts down — and lead them with calm instead of fighting them. Here’s how it works.
The short answer
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a gentle, evidence-informed approach built on a simple idea: your mind is made up of “parts,” and underneath all of them is a calm, wise core Self. The anxious part, the inner critic, the part that numbs out or people-pleases — none of them are the enemy. Each one is trying, in its own way, to protect you.
In IFS we get to know those parts with curiosity instead of judgment, understand what they’re afraid of, and help them relax so your Self can lead. It pairs beautifully with EMDR and trauma work.
Why “parts” language helps
Most of us are hard on ourselves for feeling two things at once — wanting closeness and pushing it away, wanting rest and driving ourselves anyway. That’s not a flaw; that’s parts. When you can say “a part of me feels this” instead of “I am this,” you get a little space, and space is where change happens.
From that space, you can turn toward the part that’s scared or exhausted the way you’d turn toward a frightened child — with patience, not force.
What it looks like with me
Together we slow down and notice a part — where you feel it, how old it seems, what it’s worried would happen if it stopped. We don’t argue with it or try to get rid of it. We build trust with it. Over time, protective parts soften, the tender parts underneath get the care they missed, and you feel more like yourself.
This is deep work, and it’s never rushed. You stay in charge of the pace the whole way.
Frequently asked questions
Is IFS the same as “multiple personalities”?
No. Having parts is a normal feature of every mind — it’s not a disorder. IFS simply gives language to the different feelings and reactions we all carry, and a kind way to work with them.
Can IFS and EMDR be used together?
Yes — they complement each other well. IFS helps build safety and self-trust, and EMDR reprocesses the memories underneath. I blend them based on what each person needs.
