What to Expect in Your First EMDR Session
Nervous about starting EMDR? Here’s exactly what the first few sessions look like — no reliving every detail, and always at a pace you control.
We start with safety, not the hard stuff
Your first EMDR session isn’t about diving into your worst memory. We start by getting to know each other, understanding what brought you in, and building grounding and coping skills so your nervous system has somewhere safe to land. You should never feel flooded.
You don’t have to tell me everything
One of the things people love about EMDR is that you don’t have to narrate every detail out loud. Once we begin reprocessing, you simply hold a memory in mind during short sets of gentle bilateral stimulation — eye movements, taps, or tones — and notice what comes up. You’re always in control of what you share.
What you might notice
People often describe memories starting to feel further away, less charged, more like something that happened rather than something that’s happening. Between sessions, we’ll make sure you have tools to stay steady. Healing isn’t linear, and we go at the speed of trust.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get overwhelmed?
We build in stabilization first and pace everything to your window of tolerance. You set the speed, and we can pause any time. Feeling safe enough is part of the method, not an afterthought.
How many sessions does EMDR take?
It varies. A single distressing event may resolve in a handful of sessions; complex or long-standing trauma takes longer. We’ll talk through what’s realistic for your situation.
